What’s the Password?

15 Jan

Although she doesn’t say the words, this stance means “what’s the password?” Emulating her big brothers, Cj usually does this playful move in a doorway or the at the top of the stairs if she beats you there. What does a two year old girl pick for a magic password? She usually makes us list 5 or 10 words before letting us pass, sometimes more. Some of her favorite common passwords are “cupcakes” “balloons” or “grandma”….I think she just enjoys the power to hold us back until she says we can go, the most.

Autumn Little Big Things…

8 Nov

Little things are big,  and what make life memorable.  Here are some of the little things about my kids that are memorable to me the past few months:

M.J.ready to sparr

  • M has been loving playing football.  It is pretty fun to see him catch a 20 yard pass and then see that look on his face. So proud and a little shocked (I caught it!)
  • M went to his first Tae Kwon Do tournament and got 4th place in forms and 3rd place in sparring. Both him and his Dad loved the experience overall.  I am looking forward to seeing the next one, which will be closer to home. (see short video of practicing form here, or longer video of tournament sparring here)
  • M got Student of the Month in October for being artistic/creative. Then he also got a sudden interest in playing electric guitar again.
  • Today Neil joined M for lunch at his school and it was a surprise. I am not sure who had more fun, M or his Dad.  When the kids talk you into staying for recess, you know it is good.
  • It is really fun to see him really learning how to read words and be so excited about school.
B.T.B on a hayride
  • I have been enjoying some time w/B in the mornings, on the laptop next to me, after M leaves for school and before CJ wakes up.  He likes to wake up early, then “rest in my office” with his blankie for a bit.  I like my  new office-mate.
  • I love first drawings.  B’s faces and family drawings are fun.  Big eyes, big smiles, lots of legs.
  • B has had mid-night wakings lately that result in “Daaaad” being yelled from upstairs.  Dad (or mom) goes upstairs and then he says”I just want you to lay by me.” or “I want you”. Sleepy parents usually abide, but in the meantime a bad habit has begun.  Sleeping by a cuddly kid who wants you to sleep by him, though, is not all that bad.
  • B knows how to talk the talk.  His says some pretty “big” things and his dad says “his negotiating skills have improved.” huh.
  • So he loves to Dance and Sing, he particularly likes Go Fish and a kids Halloween CD (yes all year round).  But if his mom dances or sings *too much* with him, he says “Stop Mom!” Yes he already thinks his mom is embarrassing.
  • Preschool is oozing out of this kid, he is learning so much and growing so smart.
C.J.kitty cat learns how to say trick or treat
  • She learned how to say “trick or treat” by the end of Halloween night.  She also protected her furry pink pumpkin candy holder all night until bedtime.  She then transferred all the candy to her purse, and then proceeded to try to hide her purse under her crib.
  • We are working on all of our words.  She says some words, but many others are a bit backwards or all sound like “daa” or “dis” or “joose”  or “uck” or “um”.  I have to remind her to practice all the time, “can you say [insert any random word here that CJ thinks is pronounced  "diiiis" or "aaaaaak"]?.  Maybe every word needs to have the excitement of “Trick or treat” with it for her to learn it faster.
  • We have been working on potty training, mostly when we see the look that a #2 is coming, we rush to the bathroom.  She knows the drill now because she will look at me smile, hold her hand out (grab it mom) then totally get into the mad rush to the bathroom. She is doing pretty good but we are not pushing it real hard.
  • Although she loves to try dressing herself (likes pulling up her own pants!), she likes to make it a challenge for me to get her dressed, usually escaping mid-way with giggles half naked.  The funny part, if I want to take the easy way out, I just pass the chore on to her Dad, which she will run to (instead of away) to get dressed.
Other fun stuff:
  • We went to Nelson Farm with Grandma Kathy and saw all kinds of farm animals, climbed haystacks, and went on all kinds of wagon rides.  Kids all fell asleep on the way home.
  • Halloween is one of our favorite holidays.  The kids get so excited about it that the decorations go out around Oct. 1.  The kids were Darth Vader, a Ninja, and a kitty.  The kids got a couple rounds of trick or treating in, as well as a full dose of handing out candy at our house and seeing all the other spooky and silly costumes.
  • Neil turned 36.  I had no idea that putting all those candles (an entire box) on a cake would make such a waxy, smoky mess.
  • I am a new Aunt!  Joe and Amanda had baby Nolan Hendrix! And the baby has some very proud cousins, especially when Darth Vader so little Yoda sleeping on Halloween.

My little Seedling- Charlotte’s (10-11 month milestones)

31 Aug

I can’t believe my baby will soon be 1. Really? Where did my little fit-in-one-arm, wrinkly, stationary, breast-milk-loving infant go?

Now she is BIG. She is standing up in her crib. On Saturday, at naptime, she heard Grandma kathy’s voice and was yelling from her room. When we realized the nap plan was already foiled, we went in there to discover a big girl standing up. All of a sudden she was just so grown up.

Then there is the crawling. She has moved beyond the army crawl to the real tummy off the floor moves. She even went as far last week as trying to crawl and suck her thumb at the same time. She took an elbow/head to the carpet and looked at all of us in confusion as we giggled at her silliness.

And then – the big word – Mama! At dinner time a couple weeks ago, I had given her some noodles. She loved them but struggled to pick them up with her fingers since they were slippery. After trying 3-4 times, she looked at me for help and yelled “MAMA!” Yes, I heard that word and assisted her quickly! Neil laughed at my urgency…. but the word did it! And it was so much nicer to hear then a scream!

She is practicing climbing steps, and we have the perfect place to start. One step, carpeted, to get out of her room. She gets on all 4′s then tries to get one up on the step, then falls back down on her butt and giggles. Repeat this about ten times, and then she gets it 3 times in a row. So fun to watch, and she especially likes to tackles this task after bath.

She is now such an active participant in the activities around her. Clapping at Dan and Mandy’s wedding reception, giving her dolly kisses, watching the boys play basketball and clapping at the baskets, and making the biggest, pudgy cheek smiles. She has a similar smile to Brody at that age, where she lifts her cheeks up, squints her eyes, and wrinkles her nose for the big smile.

This year was the first year that we had a garden, 2 little boxes filled with veggies and some herbs(mostly tomatoes, but also some onions, carrots, lettuce, etc) – thanks to Neil. Like our magical little garden, that has blessed us with new veggies every couple days Charlotte has surprised us too, by giving us a little bit “new” each day… My little seedling.

Wishing for a Pause or Slow-Down Button

3 Feb

Our weeks go so fast here… where is my pause button?

It seems like yesterday that I was in my twenties with no-kid freedom. All of a sudden, I am 34 and am the mama to 3. 34? Really? Mav tried to tell mom and Joe that I was 43, but thankfully they corrected him. I love having 3 kids. It is crazy-nuts, in a busy, tired, constant buzz fun kind of way. I just don’t know where the past 5, or 10 years has went?

There is a sign in our pediatricians office that says, “when raising kids, the years go fast, but the days go slow”… so true. There has been days where I could not wait for Neil to come home to give me some RELIEF. Or anxiously awaiting the kids’ bedtime after a challenging day. Or night after night of waking up every couple hours with the boys…. those were some LONG nights. And then I wonder, where did that little boy go, with the long red curls and the obsession for bowling and the moon? OK he still likes bowling, but the moon is not quite as interesting to a toddler as it was to a preschooler.

The boys waiting for the strike.

So here I am, wondering – - how do I make time go slower? How do I make the most out of every moment? How do I make room for everything that is important to my family? Maybe 3 more hours in my day? One more day a week? Less sleep? Less work?

Here are some of the latest happenings in our house:

-Mav is proud to be in the “zipper club” at preschool. Only about half the kids in his class can zip their coat by themselves. He is learning so much, telling stories and jokes, and has a great sense of humor. I am so proud to see my little boy be able to write out new words and learn sounds for letters.

This is what it's like living with 2 older brothers...

-Charlotte is such a sweetheart. Smiley and mellow as can be. She is still squeaky and we are going back to the ENT specialist in a month or so. Hopefully it will clear up on its own. She is still very small (in weight) for her age, but seems to be growing consistently. When I weighed her today (at home), she was 12 lbs. 8 oz. She is starting to vocalize more and showing signs of wanting to roll over soon. Brody especially adores his little sister.

-We have been using rewards charts for the boys to encourage good behavior (Brody on the potty, Mav being nice to his bro, cleaning up, etc.) They have been working pretty good. Ironic to me though, that out of a whole “treasure chest” of dollar store toys, coins, and candy, they pick the candy! Really?! I also found Brody’s little dude form his chart (Brody has a pirate going to a pirate ship, Mav has an astronaut going to his spaceship) in strange places. He put it in CJ’s diaper pail once. I got these charts on supernanny.com if anyone is interested.

Brody in his big boy bed.

-Brody has been sleeping in the daybed in his room for about a week. He always wants us to lay by him, and then he just wants to lay there and play. Sometimes he gets up and turns his light on. But overall he is learning what how big boys sleep. Eventually he will move into Mav’s room.

-Brody’s vocabulary is growing so much. His favorite words used to be “dis” (this) and “no”. But now he is talking about colors and body parts and people and sports. It is a great feeling to make a connection with him, when you actually understand what he is saying! Tonite, he kept saying “pit!” which ended up being the word “spit”. He demonstrated the word spit for me, and I was able to figure it out rather quickly!

Brody Helps Himself

28 Jan

Well we are yet again at a new stage. Brody has learned how to crawl out of his crib, and I don’t think he will ever stay in it for a full night again. Last night I discovered this (had to be a sole parenting night too as Neil was bowling) and it ended up taking about two hours to get him to sleep. I would lay by him and he would talk and play and want to get up. He would talk about the cutest things (my eyes, the babies eyes, the baby eating, what he eats). Then I would try to leave the room to get him to fall asleep on his own. About a minute after I get downstairs, I hear running upstairs, doors slamming, and then he turns the light on in Mav’s room and starts playing in there while he was sleeping! NUTS. It will definitely be an adjustment. And I think I will have to get used to not having my hour or 2 of free time after the kids bedtime… since everything will take longer.

You can't pay for these kinds of amenities.

I think a lot of it started this weekend, when Brody had to sleep with Mav in the pull out sofa at the hotel. It took him forever to settle down in bed, and not terrorize the hotel room. Finally, at the end of the night, here is what I saw (see photo to left).

Brody likes to move things around, stash them hide them, keep it for later. We have found stashes of small toys, kitchen items, and cell phones in odd places. He likes to put things in the fridge, just for fun – like his blanket. He emptied out all my aluminum foil, ziplocs, etc and put them in the fridge! Here is a photo:

I'm not sure that ziplocs need to be refrigerated, but Hey, if you got the room, put them in!

I love the conversations that Brody is starting. To finally be able to have a little bit of communication with this small person is HELPFUL. Most sentences consist of:

-”Me Milk” or Me [enter and food item here]
-”Me Help” meaning I will help myself and I want to do it by myself
-”Dada work” or “Dada bowl” OR “Dada’s [enter item here]
-”Baby crying” or “babies gankie (blanket)” “Baby eat” or anything with the baby
-”Hi Mama” Love this one in the morning or “Mama’s baby”
-”Mine [enter toy name]“

Family Brain Dump for the past couple weeks

5 Aug

This summer has been a bit of a blur. Every weekend full of fun, whether it has been local “fun” days, chilling at the lake, or our recent trip to Valleyfair. Summers in Minnesota are always FULL of things to do. Then you get to winter – and it is BLAH. Especially in Olivia, MN. How I wish all these fun events could be spread out a bit…as soon as it settles down, I will have another baby I don’t know if I will be ready! Maybe by the time Sept. 1 comes it will hit me that it is the final countdown!

We are pretty sure on the girl name, still working on the boy name. Which is frustrating because I really think it is a boy. Everything is the same as my last pregnancies…. I maybe crave sweets a little more, but it’s a boy. I know it. And we cannot find a name that we both like…. Well we have 2 months yet.

We got a new car! So that is one BIG item crossed off the list! We now have comfort and room for lots of kids, friends, family, stuff, whatever. What sold me is the power fold down rear seats in the Expedition. So it is easy to haul either kids or stuff.

Our fam and the Expedition!

Our fam and the Expedition!

Mav has a nasty cough, and now he gave it to me. It is a horrible coughing spasm that I do not need now. He gets so sensitive when he is sick and thinks I need to stay home with him. It is so hard to hear him say that, because there are many days I want to stay home!

I am kicking butt at work and whipping out lots of great projects. Hoping to feel good about going on leave when the time comes. Scheduling blog posts to publish while I am gone, direct mail campaigns out the door.

Brody talks to me! Oh how I love the communication! Neil pointed out that Brody said to me “look what I found” when he had a little ant on his arm! My sweet little guy is saying little sentences! I guess it is time for another baby…

It has been a tough week with this sickness, attitudes, and emotions in this house. A prayer at dinner tonite that asked for health and good kids, got a comment from Mav afterwards. “mom why did you say that prayer? that’s bad”. He is used to me saying thanks for family, friends, this beautiful earth, etc. Not “god help my kids me good!” Maybe it worked though, I had little angels the rest of the night. :)

Babies, Communication, and Dance

17 Jul

It is reality that soon by little baby will no longer be the baby. I am not sure if I am really ready for that? I know he is not. He is *a bit* of a mama’s boy, likes to be held ALOT. I am so proud of him though and how he is growing up. He says “gank oo” (thank you) so well…. well maybe not that good because he was saying it to gma all night one night and she did not know what he was saying….Like Mav did when he was his age (and most babes I presume) he eats like a champ. Where Mav is pickier now, B will eat whatever he can, no matter what it is. I wish Mav would not have grown pickier but I guess that is normal!

B has just started being VERY clear about nodding YES and NO. He does it very deliberately when he knows what he wants. It is so precious, and I hope to get video of it online soon.
*note to self- get more vid of the boys!

THe boys love to dance, and it is so hilarious and carefree. Watching them dance and giggle has got to be one of the best stress relievers. We need to work more music into our lives though… and I need to get some vid of them shaking their booty (see this vid from last summer for a little chuckle)

Brody says “All Done”

19 Jan

This morning, Brody said “all done” when he was done drinking his milk! Mav, dad and I all looked at each other with a “did you hear that?” look! It was so weird to hear it (what seemed like) so clearly! Mav was so proud, he started to talk about what the other baby at daycare says, and then told Monica about it when we got to her house!

Brody’s words so far have consisted of mostly:
Dada 80%
Mama 10%
Baba 5%
Nana (as in ba-nana) 5%
And I thought I heard him say “Cheese Stick” a couple nights ago (clear as day!) when I handed him some string cheese, but maybe that’s a stretch.

Beyond Words

So proud of the pumpkins we carved...

So proud of the pumpkins we carved...

Maverick is in a stage of ultimate learning. I think this is my favorite part of momhood so far. We have had plenty of power struggles too, but when it comes to the questions and watching him play and help and do so many big boy things, I am so impressed. He can count all my himself to 13 (but usually starts at 3 and skips 11). He loves to bowl on many levels (at the bowling alley, at home with plastic pins, and with dad on the Wii). He also loves to golf and be outside and ride bike! He is typically a very good eater, but is infatuated with “newton bars” (fig newtons) which we give to him sparingly. He is just plain silly, especially on weekends and towards the end of a meal. Last night he insisted that I was a “gook” and was laughing hysterically at me. He loves his uncles and grandparents and great grandparents so much. He talks often about “great grandma” and visiting her at the “nursing home”, then goes on to talk about hugs and being “her boy” as she says to him over and over when dad and Mav visit. We are still working on potty training, Mav sits for 20-30 minutes but nothing. Last night was a big night, we put together a bed in Mav’s room to get him used to it. By the end of the night he was so cozy there, we were reading books and he said that is where he wanted to sleep. He was so proud to sleep in his big boy bed. We are too.

Mav Using his Words

Mav with the goose that uncle Jon shot

Mav with the goose that uncle Jon shot

Maverick is so vocal now. I go thru the days wishing I could document everything he is learning and saying. Here are some of his latest:

“I don’t like it.”

“Done crying now.”

“Where’s dada?”

“flax seed please” (he sees us put in on our cereal and wants to put it on all his foods)

“Cuz.” (we say why cuz) “because”

“mama eat”

“ride tractor”

“peanut butter sandwhich”

“newton bar”

“coffee making?”

“hi kids!”

“tickle, tickle, tickle turkey!”

“big truck coming”

Any many more….
