Making our Valentines

11 Feb

Last February, while on maternity leave, my son Mav and I made these really cute homemade valentines that had a hot cocoa packet, red paper cup, and some marshmallows and chocolate kisses in a baggie in the cup. The front had a heart that said ” A cup full of love” or “You warm me up inside”. I have to admit, they turned out really good, and Maverick enjoyed “making” them.

This year, we started early, and found some more neat homemade valentine ideas (all these are from Family Fun Magazine). One thing I did not think of though, is the fact that we had to make about 4x as many as last year (oh yeah, we have another kid in the mix, Brody who is 1) and not only do we need Valentines for daycare, but now Mav’s preschool too. OK, we can handle that.

Here we are in the middle of our valentine extravaganza!

Here we are in the middle of our valentine extravaganza!

I like variety. And there are 2 kids, so we need at least two kinds of valentines right? Here is what we did:

1) The Bag of Bear Hugs: We used teddy grahams and gummy bears in a little plastic baggy, with a note tied on with a ribbon with sayings like “Bag of bear hugs” and “Cubs and Kisses”. Probably has the best “treats” and Maverick liked filling the bags (he is 3 and a half). Don’t mix the gummies and teddy grahams, the teddy grahams will get soggy.

2) The “Write on” Pencil Valentine: I picked up a bag of valentine pencils, then we used double-faced tape to secure a “flag” as Mav called it, onto the pencil saying notes like “Valentine, your write for me” and “Your Sharp!” Cute, but understandably probably not a favorite valentine of kids.

3) The Two of a Kind Valentine: I picked up a bag of tootsie pops, but most any treat could be used, again, used double face tape and a peice of red cardstock to fold over the sticks and secure with the tape (get GOOD tape). Then wrote on the note, “We’re a Perfect Match” and “2 of a Kind”.

4) You Make My Day Bookmark Valentine: I liked this one, because it re-used old calenders, and seemed like a fun idea for teachers. Basically use last years calender, and cut out the top week, so you get your days listed on top, and a full week with numbers. We actually cut out just Mon-Fri to make it shorter. Then paste it on colored paper (Maverick loves working with paste/glue), punch a hole, tie a ribbon on top, and write sayings like “You make me WEEK in the knees” or “You make my Day”, etc. We also added some heart and flower stickers on the calendar.

This isn't a very good picture, but you get the idea.

Since my son still likes to work on these kinds of “art projects” with me, I will take advantage of it all I can. Also good practice for writing his name, he did really well in the beginning but then had an idea of drawing “train tracks” on the valentine first, and then writing his name. Well it was hard to get him to his name when he was busy with train tracks. At any rate, it gets the creative juices going a little bit and is an activity beyond trains and monster trucks, kind of.

Maverick Sings Bob the Builder (Video)

18 Jan

Mav has liked Bob the Builder for a while now, even though I think Thomas the Train has earned the #1 spot. The Bob the Builder song is heard often at our house… This video is from Thanksgiving at Grandma and Grandpa Haen’s where Maverick shares some of his singing skills.

Watch for: the added guitar strums, the twirl while singing, and the graceful trip.

Mav goes to Preschool and Rides the Bus!

Here is Mav at his first day of school! Hooray!

This morning was Mav’s first day of preschool. He was so excited. He woke up to his alarm and came down and “scared” dad. Then he had some oatmeal and got dressed! And with no arguments! Lately, the mornings have been so hard because Mav has been in a “No” stage and refused to get dressed, brush teeth, put boots on, you name it. None of that this morning because Mav was excited about school.

He thinks his backpack is way cool, and was very concerned about bringing it. I dropped him off and helped him put his coat and bag in the spots by his name. One of the teachers was making train sounds as we were taking his coat off, which got his attention right away. I said my (couple) goodbyes and heard the teacher ask him what he wanted to play with… I am glad it is laid back, or at least for a little while, so Mav sees it more as fun then anything.

I called him at 11:30 and he just got off the bus at daycare… I can’t wait to talk him more about what he did.

Mornings need a kick start

American Innovation Talking Alarm Clock- Can it help my morning woes?

American Innovation Talking Alarm Clock- Can it help my morning woes?

I got Maverick a really cool alarm clock for Christmas. It is designed for kids and also is suppose to teach them how to tell time. Also lights up when it is OK for them to wake up (we could have used that about 9 months ago). I splurged on it and spent $40 on Amazon. I looked everywhere and really found nothing that compared.

Almost every morning I have to go and wake up that bear. He can be so crabby in the morning, and man he is pokey! I am sure that it is my own childhood coming back to haunt me, but come on! So that point of the fancy new alarm clock, is to get him going earlier, waking up on his own, and ready on time. Do you think it can happen? He is also starting preschool next week, so that is another incentive. We really don’t have to get up an earlier to goto preschool but thought that may be a good time to start a new responsibility. We will see.

Christmas until Midnight Reflections

30 Dec

Christmas is so much more fun with kids… and we had four days of Christmas, so one holiday is more like a holiweek! On Christmas eve, both boys were up until midnight, with Maverick falling asleep on the short ride home. Brody on the other hand was still ready to party. He did however go right to sleep once he hit the crib. x

Here is a photo of Brody at Midnight on Christmas Eve. Even by the time we got home, he was wide awake and ready to play some more!

Mav Tells Santa what he Wants for Christmas (video)

Santa came and visited us and Maverick sat on his lap! He wasn’t afraid, although he nodded more then he talked. He has 2 things that he wants for Christmas, a bowling ball and a crane!

Mav and Oz, Brod and Dada

Maverick watched Wizard of Oz tonight, and put his hands half over his eyes during some scary parts, like the trees in the forest. He doesn’t like watching shows that are scary (i.e. Finding Nemo never used to be but now it is). He seems so polite lately, saying “thank you” all the time, and lots of “your welcomes” too. Oh and one of my favorites, when I ask him to do something, “OK Mom!” with a cheer in his voice. Man that feels good.

Mobile Brody is slowly advancing from the army crawl to a hands and knees crawl. He has 4 buck teeth now, and I can see one popping in on the top and one on the bottom. He loves finger foods, and would prefer to eat exactly what the rest of us our eating for dinner instead of that crummy baby food.

Oh the things that Mav says… I so wish I could record them all somehow. Maybe what makes them so entertaining to me is his matter-of-fact tone and serious look on his face. Like, “mom I’m done waking up now.” and “I am too hot for my pajamas.” .. and then there are a series of them around naps, treats, and trains. Like “After I eat my cottage cheese, then I can have a halloween treat. I will dump it all out mom, not you.” Or “after I have lunch, I don’t have to take a nap anymore.” So funny… and entertaining.

And back to Brody, just like Mav, his first and favorite word at this point is Dada. He really thinks his dad is cool, not unlike his mama.fu

The Haen Reunion this year was a blast, sure is fun with little kids to enjoy it with. It was great to see all the cousins again, and to let the next generation of cousins play together!

Maverick is 3 years old! He had a fun day at home with his dad. They went to the park, library, and to the bowling alley for lunch. Then Maverick played in his swimming pool outside and his grandparents and uncles came over for a party… what a special fun day. We are so proud of our big boy. Then on Friday he had summer rec and then a fun party at daycare too… Saturday topped it off with a slumber party at diamond lake with grandma and grandpa and Andrew.

Fun at the Como Zoo for Mom’s Day

Mav probably enjoyed the rides at the zoo more then the animals.

We went to the Como Zoo for moms day. It was beautiful and so fun. Mav liked the animals, but REALLY liked the rides and the playground. He went on the car ride twice and he really liked the train too. Brody slept a lot but liked getting out. Mav actually stayed awake the whole drive home too which was unbelievable to me….
