Mission Accomplished: Kids got Swing Set!

23 Apr

I hope to not have to look at Craig’s list for a long, long time. The past month or so, I was looking for a swing set for the kids, and it burned me a couple times but turned out good at the end. Find one you like, it’s gone. Find one close, it’s crap. Be the first caller ready to pick up early next morning, they sell to someone else. I almost gave up. I know that persistence pays off, everything happens for a reason. And even through the law of attraction, if I think about that perfect swing set, it should come to me, right? So funny how things work, I went from feeling screwed over and totally disappointed, to actually finding a better deal on a newer set. The only catch, a longer drive. But even that proved to be a great day of fun with my hubby.

So here are some pics of the kids on their new swing set. Found it last Thursday night, drove to Hastings, MN Friday to get it, Neil set up Saturday, and now our backyard fun. I am not sure who is happier, me or the kids.

We have already had several (minor) injuries… but that ain’t stopping them. M is learning how tough it is to do monkey bars, and B likes to go back and forth on the swing on his tummy…the slide is fast, with quite the little “bump” at the end…. yes I tried it!

Making our Valentines

11 Feb

Last February, while on maternity leave, my son Mav and I made these really cute homemade valentines that had a hot cocoa packet, red paper cup, and some marshmallows and chocolate kisses in a baggie in the cup. The front had a heart that said ” A cup full of love” or “You warm me up inside”. I have to admit, they turned out really good, and Maverick enjoyed “making” them.

This year, we started early, and found some more neat homemade valentine ideas (all these are from Family Fun Magazine). One thing I did not think of though, is the fact that we had to make about 4x as many as last year (oh yeah, we have another kid in the mix, Brody who is 1) and not only do we need Valentines for daycare, but now Mav’s preschool too. OK, we can handle that.

Here we are in the middle of our valentine extravaganza!

I like variety. And there are 2 kids, so we need at least two kinds of valentines right? Here is what we did:

1) The Bag of Bear Hugs: We used teddy grahams and gummy bears in a little plastic baggy, with a note tied on with a ribbon with sayings like “Bag of bear hugs” and “Cubs and Kisses”. Probably has the best “treats” and Maverick liked filling the bags (he is 3 and a half). Don’t mix the gummies and teddy grahams, the teddy grahams will get soggy.

2) The “Write on” Pencil Valentine: I picked up a bag of valentine pencils, then we used double-faced tape to secure a “flag” as Mav called it, onto the pencil saying notes like “Valentine, your write for me” and “Your Sharp!” Cute, but understandably probably not a favorite valentine of kids.

3) The Two of a Kind Valentine: I picked up a bag of tootsie pops, but most any treat could be used, again, used double face tape and a peice of red cardstock to fold over the sticks and secure with the tape (get GOOD tape). Then wrote on the note, “We’re a Perfect Match” and “2 of a Kind”.

4) You Make My Day Bookmark Valentine: I liked this one, because it re-used old calenders, and seemed like a fun idea for teachers. Basically use last years calender, and cut out the top week, so you get your days listed on top, and a full week with numbers. We actually cut out just Mon-Fri to make it shorter. Then paste it on colored paper (Maverick loves working with paste/glue), punch a hole, tie a ribbon on top, and write sayings like “You make me WEEK in the knees” or “You make my Day”, etc. We also added some heart and flower stickers on the calendar.

This isn't a very good picture, but you get the idea.

Since my son still likes to work on these kinds of “art projects” with me, I will take advantage of it all I can. Also good practice for writing his name, he did really well in the beginning but then had an idea of drawing “train tracks” on the valentine first, and then writing his name. Well it was hard to get him to his name when he was busy with train tracks. At any rate, it gets the creative juices going a little bit and is an activity beyond trains and monster trucks, kind of.

Looking Back on the Past 8 Weeks

Big Mav and little Brody- Brothers

I can’t believe that Brody is already 8 weeks old and my special time with my boys is nearly over. I am going back to work on Monday and will be full time by the end of March. Looking back, it was such a roller coaster ride. I had so much fun spending the days relaxing with the boys, looking at the calendar that Mav and I made and talking about what we were going to do each day (dad’s great idea). Brody and Mav have grown closer. Mav says things like “Brody’s talking to me!” and wants to come with me to get Brody dressed and give him a bath. Mav and I really got used to having breakfast together every morning ( and if he got up early enough he had breakfast with dad too). Our mornings consisted of Mav with peanut butter and jam toast with hot chocolate and red juice, while I was feeding Brody and we watched Clifford or Curious George Other times, Brody would be crying for reasons I could not determine, and at the same time, Maverick demanded my time as well. I attempted to work on Mav’s potty training here while at home with little success… at one time he fell in the toilet when he sat down with the lid up while I left the room to tend to Brody… I wish I could write down all the memories if I had the time. Brody is what many would call a “spirited” baby. Many of my days ended with a sore back from carrying him around most of the day in my “kangaroo” pack to get him to sleep or calm him down. So far, he doesn’t care for the swing like Mav did. I can’t wait until I can get out and take him for walks outside!

Here is the sign of a tough day... hauling Brody around in the pack until he would finally fall alseep, then sneakily putting him on the bed so we can both rest.

Some of my fondest memories are of giving Brody a bath, it calmed him so, and Mav loved to help.

While I was home on leave with the boys, Maverick and I made a monthly calendar, and wrote down all the special days. It was a fun project and Maverick really liked looking at it each day.
